CS Analysis

Portugal have never won the WC, but this could be the team to do it. The best midfield in the tournament could control play, and if the attackers are able to finish this side will be tough to beat. And don’t forget Christiano Ronaldo, the superstar is in his last WC and there are questions of the role he will play. He is not at the level of his prime, but will there be some magic left to help the team. How manager Roberto Martinez handles the rotation will be a key to their success.

Most Interesting Player

Christiano Ronaldo (Al-Nassr, Saudi Arabia)

41-year-old captain chasing the one missing trophy in his likely final World Cup. Will he start, will he play, will he score. If he doesn’t will he pout. Portugal is full of great players, but Ronaldo is still the most interesting.

DR Congo is athletic, full of European-based talent, possessing the quality to reach the knockout stage. For Congo DR to make a deep run they will need their midfield to control the tempo and the forwards to convert chances in transition. They will look to play with high intensity, press aggressively, and counter at pace. This side could surprise everyone and go far or exit in the round of 16 if the intensity drops at the wrong moment.

The club will have some extra challenges as travel to the USA from Democratic Republic of Congo as there is an Ebola outbreak and the team will need to be cleared only after being out of the country for a period of time.

Most Interesting Player

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (West Ham)

Premier League household name who switched allegiance to his roots (mild controversy and fan love for the “homecoming”). His elite defensive recoveries and overlapping runs make him a dynamic differentiator. Media touts him as the star anchor for the Leopards.

Uzbekistan is disciplined and organized, built on domestic-league experience and a few standout internationals. The first timers will need to stay disciplined to make an impact in the group. For Uzbekistan to make a deep run they will need their defense to remain solid and the creative players to link up on the counter. They will look to sit compact, absorb pressure, and strike on the break. Any earned points will be a win.

Most Interesting Player

Abdukodir Khusanov (Man City)

22-year-old Premier League breakout and first Uzbek to star at Man City. Fans are loving the historic rise. Composure and progressive defending deliver dynamic, modern center-back play. Expecting a breakout at the World Cup.

Colombia has a strong, well-balanced squad blending experienced leaders with exciting young talent. Colombia did not make the 2022 WC but are back and capable of making a deep run. They will press intensely, play with high energy and look for gaps in transition. To make the run if their defensive anchors stay solid and the attacking talents convert chances in big moments. They will look to press intensely, play with high energy, and exploit transitions. This side could surprise everyone and go far or exit in the round of 16 if the intensity dips.

Most Interesting Player

James Rodriguez (Minnesota MLS)

2014 Golden Boot legend and captain whom Colombian fans still idolize. MLS move at age 34 sparked mild “is he past it?” controversy. Vision and set-piece magic remain dynamically brilliant and media-ready for another vintage World Cup show.

In Summary

Portugal’s star-studded, counter-attacking machine and midfield brilliance are looking to win their first ever WC and send Ronaldo out on a high. Roberto Martinez is the best manager in the group, Bruno Fernandez the bet player, and the talent on this team will evident all across the starters and subs. After saying that, don’t be surprised when Colombia fans say “hold my beer”. One of the tops teams in South America, Colombia’s high intensity counterattacking and grit will be tough to beat, and don’t be surprised if Colombia gets a bump in “home-field” like advantage as they will be used to playing in the US and Mexico. DR Congo’s athletic, physical power also includes a couple EPL stars, they could surprise. Uzbekistan is the underdog, but they are organized and the best of the four first timers in the WC.

About the Team

Only 8 teams have won the WC, ever. Portugal has not, but they have the team to do it this year. Ronaldo is the figurehead, but this tournament may rest on Bruno Fernandes’ quality and leadership. The squad shows a seamless handoff from the Ronaldo era into a new wave of talent, with the question now being whether the youthful flair can deliver on the biggest stage. Fernandes and Ronaldo are stars but for this side to win it all they will need the next wave of exciting attackers in Rafael Leao, Goncalo Ramos and young talents like Joao Neves and Antonio Silva—some of the most dynamic in European soccer— to step up in big moments.

The Fans

The Selecao are in the top 10 of world soccer fans. Just recently Portugal’s national-team Instagram account overtook Brazil’s to become the most followed in the world. Interestingly, Portugal fans are known for being pessimistic - “we are going to lose” seems to be the starting point.
