16 Home Team Jersey, Irony & Rankings

EPL Match Week 6 Preview

Neyland Stadium - Knoxville

Seeing videos of Peyton Manning in a full Tennessee Volunteer uniform - “16 home team jersey on” - walk out at the latest Morgan Wallen concert in Neyland Stadium in Knoxville was awesome. Add to that Hardy, Darius Rucker, Ernest, Eric Church and Miranda Lambert - great show. And Hardy did what he does, makes his feeling known, held nothing back.

If you’re in Knoxville, make sure to check out Saloon 16 in the Graduate Hotel, Peyton’s place. When he’s in town, that’s where he hangs out.

  • Here’s the walkout, to the song Broadway Girls.

  • MW’s final 3 shows this year, if you’re in the area, grab tickets and go.

    • Oct 4 in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium.

    • Oct 18 & 19 in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium.

Headlines 📌

  • CS Match of the Week. Man United +200 v Tottenham +175 SUN 1030a - Two sides with high expectations but underperforming them so far this season. United had a ROUGH mid-week match in the Europa Leage at home against Twente, drawing 1-1. Ever heard of Twente? CS neither. They are part of the Eredivisie (Dutch) league. Bottom line, United should be winning these home matches 6-1. The pressure on ten Hag has to be huge and the team is not responding, or they just are not very good. Spurs on the other hand have yet to declare who they are. Ange talks about winning cups, but so far, they are underperforming and have been under Ange, not including the hot start they had in their first 10 match’s last season. Both teams sit at 2W 1 D 2L on the season and this match could go a long way for either side to instill some confidence, keep the fans satisfied and to jump back into the top 5.

  • 7.2.1 Weekend. 7 Saturday, 2 Sunday, 1 Monday.

  • Irony. The PL spent $60M on legal fees to handle disputes over its financial regulations last season.

  • Friedkin. The Friedkin Group, based in Houston, TX is buying Everton, for real. They also own Roma in Serie A. The sale is expected to be finalized over the next 2-3 months for $500M. Dan Friedkin, Owner and Chief Executive, is worth $6.5B. The Friedkin wealth was created in the airline industry. Dan also created Imperative Entertainment, a studio specializing in independent film and television. Here is more on the sale from BBC Sport.

  • Golden Boot. Who will score the most goals and win the PL Golden Boot this season? Maybe the question should be who will finish second. Barring injury, Haaland is well on his way to winning it. Here is everyone who has scored 2 or more goals through 5 matches this season.

  • Erling Haaland, Manchester City — 10

  • Luis Diaz, Liverpool — 5

  • Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea — 4

  • Bryan Mbeumo, Brentford — 4

  • Jhon Duran, Aston Villa — 4

  • Noni Madueke, Chelsea — 3

  • Mohamed Salah, Liverpool — 3

  • Yoane Wissa, Brentford — 3

  • Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa — 3

  • Harvey Barnes, Newcastle United — 3

  • Danny Welbeck, BHA — 3

  • Chris Wood, Nottingham Forest -- 3

  • Heung-min Son, Tottenham Hotspur — 2

  • Kai Havertz, Arsenal — 2

  • Joao Pedro, BHA — 2

  • Amadou Onana, Aston Villa — 2

  • Antoine Semenyo, Bournemouth — 2

  • Jamie Vardy, Leicester City — 2

  • Jean-Philippe Mateta, Crystal Palace — 2

  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Everton — 2

  • Cole Palmer, Chelsea — 2

  • Raul Jimenez, Fulham — 2

  • Matheus Cunha, Wolves — 2

  • Emile Smith-Rowe, Fulham — 2

  • Stephy Mavididi, Leicester City — 2

  • Gabriel Magalhaes, Arsenal — 2

What 2 Look 4 👀- Match Week 6

“Outlook” - Winner gets a nice boost against a top of table side.

  • Chelsea -105 v BHA+280 SAT 9a - Statement game for both sides. The Blues have not allowed a goal in over 300’ of play and the Bridge will be an advantage. BHA will be without their Gaffer as Hurzeler will need to sit after his red card from last week.

  • Newcastle +320 v Man City -125 SAT 630a - How will City fill the Rodri gap. Last season they handled being without KDB pretty well and they are City, lots of talent. This will be Newcastle toughest opponent by far this season and a big test for Eddie Howe. Are they contenders or will they be pretenders. There have been some great matches at St Jame’s Park between these two the last couple years. Expect the same here.

“More Surprised Than Me” - One of these matches is a Top 10 Match Up, the other is Bottom 10.

  • Forest +140 v Fulham +220 SAT 9a - TOP TEN. No Nuno or Gibbs-White on the bench after red cards. The Tree’s have yet to lose this season and will need to dig deep against a FFC side that handled Newcastle last week. But FFC on the road, and after a win, has seemed to be a struggle for the Cottagers.

  • Man United +125 v Tottenham +175 SUN 1030a - NOT TOP TEN. Both sides should be better than sitting outside the top 10 of the table. Fanbases will expect all 3 points on either side. United was embarrassed mid-week in the Europa League admitting they were outplayed by a side that wanted it more. Ange was clear he was resting his players mid-week and the expectation is they will be fresh. Regardless, expect a high intensity “must win” feel to this one.

“Had Me By Halftime” - These matches could be over by HT.

  • Arsenal -319 v Leicester City +900 SAT 9a - The Gunner’s may springboard after their draw at City last week. They are getting healthy and there is a feeling that City is gettable this year, especially with Rodri rules out for the season. The Foxes have yet to be in a match this season where a side didn’t score. But Arsenal’s defense is different and finding the net will be tough. Can LCFC’s defense hold up to the pressure. There will be not pressure of expectations for the Foxes which may be an advantage.

  • Wolves +525 v Liverpool -210 SAT 1130a - For Wolves, they have been in every match this season, until they weren’t. They have had short spurts in matches of giving up multiple goals and Liverpool can score in bunches. If that holds, the Red’s could score 3 at any point of the match in a 15’ stretch and Wolves will not score multiple goals. If the Wolves want points, they will need to keep it close early and avoid those down moments.

  • Ipswich Town +320 v Aston Villa -120 SUN 8a - 3 straight draws for the Tractor Boys is a good sign. Villa have scored 2+ goals in 5 of their 6 PL matches this season while Ipswich Town have scored 3 goals all season. Expect this one to be tight and to come down to a mid 2H window where Villa makes a significant run, the question will be if they can find the net.

“Bandaid on a Bullet Hole” - Sides with big issues trying to fix their problems.

  • Everton +175 v Palace +150 SAT 9a - Both looking for their first win of the season. The Toffee’s have given up 14 goals through 5 matches. Feels like this could end with both sides still looking for their first win.

  • Brentford +140 v West Ham +200 SAT 9a - London Derby. The Hammer’s have looked lost at times this season. The Bee’s have beaten West Ham 5 of the last 6 PL matches, including the last 3 at home. The Bee’s overperform at home yet the Hammer’s only win this year came on the road.

  • Bournemouth -115 v Southampton +300 MON 2p - “Are you ready for some football…a Monday night party…..”. It’s Monday Night Football, England style, as two South Coast clubs battle for points to stay clear of relegation. The Saints were a minute away from their first win back in the PL. The Cherries have had late heroics to take points early in the season but have not scored in 2 weeks. The cherries are big favorites by the bookies, but this one seems like it will be closer than that.

EUROPA LEAGUE - LEAUGE PHASE

“Livin’ the Dream” - for many of these clubs, this is a chance to play bigger clubs and have a shot to show Europe what they and their fans have.

A week ago, we discussed the Champions League structure. You can check it out here. And, here is NBC Sports Soccer coverage explanation.

The Europa League is like the NIT to the NCAA Tournament in College Basketball. But better than the NIT. The first of 8 matches were played this week.

  • Man United really disappoint by drawing at home. United 1-1 Twente (Dutch)

  • Spurs get all 3 points at home, even after Ange said, “The best players won’t play”. Recognizing the busy schedule, the competition and the length of the season. Tottenham 3-0 Qarabag (Azerbaijan)

Matches will be played on the remaining 7 set of dates.

  • October 3

  • October 24

  • November 7

  • November 28

  • December 12

  • January 23

  • January 30 (matches played at same time)

The top 8 clubs of the 36 in the points standings will automatically advance to the Round of 16. The next best 16 clubs will play a home and away total goal series to determine the remaining 8 clubs to advance.

Here are the current standings after 2 matches. United has some work to do.

Match Week 6 - Winners Only Please

Arsenal to win -319 v LCFC. $319

The red card at City and the way the team rallied may be an inflection point for the Gunners where they take the next step forward. LCFC has been in matches, scored in every match and could surprise here.

Forest to win +140 v Fulham. $40

Go with the hot hand that are the Tree’s. Also, the Cottagers seem like they struggle to win back-to-back. Take the “+” number and watch Nuno take Forest into the top 5. Nuno will not be on the sideline and Gibbs-White will have to sit due to their red cards. This is where the club rallies around their leaders and Nuno does the work in the lead up.

Chelsea to win -105 v BHA. $21

Go with the hot hand that are The Blues. Chelsea have been figuring it out under Enzo Maresca while Hurzeler seems to leveled off after the hot start the Seagulls had.

Aston Villa to Win -120 at Ipswich Town. $24

Going to continue to take an undervalued Villa side. Emery has this team playing at a high level, and while they have won late, they’ve won. The Tractor Boys have three straight draws with 2 goals or less being scored in each game. Expect Villa to find the net more than once.

Brentford to Win +140 v West Ham. $20

This is a Frank > Lopetegui and home pitch advantage bet.

Longshots of the week

Scoring has been down, let’s bet on that.

Under 3.5 goals. Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolves, United, Bournemouth, +1886. $10

Under 2.5 goals. Brentford, Forest, Everton, Ipswich +1368. $10

Everton v Palace AND United v Tottenham to DRAW +1121. $10
