16M watched FOX for USMNT game 1, most watched USMNT match ever on US English language TV and 2nd most watched FIFA WC match in USA. Add in streaming and Telemundo and the number is over 25M.
The environments in the stadiums, fan fests, and watch parties have been GREAT. While there has been drama around tickets (and YES, FIFA’s approach and policies SUCK), stadiums are full, the crowds are loud, AND the DEMAND is only growing. USMNT tickets next Friday in Seattle are jumping.
Seems like the only negativity around the tournament are those who don’t want it to do well.
Qatar shock Group C favorite Switzerland with a draw 1-1 on a goal with 2’ remaining and give Canada and B-H hope as all teams sit on 1 point.
Switzerland v Qatar in Santa Clara, the SF 49ers stadium that holds around 68,000 had about 600 available seats. 99% sold for two national teams no one knows in the USA, has a relatively small US population (compared to say Brazil), and yet the energy was awesome.
Carlo Ancelotti, manager of Brazil and former Real Madrid stud, just brings a different energy. Brilliant.
Morocco and Brazil played to a 1-1 draw, both sides can go a long way.
Scotland beat Haiti 1-0, yet Haiti deserved points and looked like they belong in the WC.
The Flower of Scotland, the Scotland Anthem, is a top 5 pregame in all of sport.
Scotland is so fun to root for and with, but they are gonna need to play way better to advance.
Studio hosts hitting their stride - Rebecca Lowe, Therry Henry, Zlatan and Lalas - a great listen.
And to all the Lalas haters - get over it.
Australia v Turkey - too late for this publication.

Group E Teams in a Sentence
Germany - Historical dominance, now with unproven but talented youngsters.
Ivory Coast - Attacking, physical dominance.
Curacao - Smallest country ever in their FIRST WC.
Ecuador - Passionate, defending dominance.
For more on each team - see the CS GROUP E Simple Guide.

In Summary
Germany’s high-intensity, possession-dominant machine (under their structured manager) on paper towers over this group. Julian Nagelsmann, Germany’s manager is the best in the group, has the side with the most depth, and can be a difference maker tactically over the course of a game. They also have the best player in the group, Jamal Musiala. The Bayern Munich player can control a match in this ball possession style. Ecuador will bring a defensive focus looking to counter-attack relentlessly. Ivory Coast’s athletic flair and physicality, including a high pressing style similar to the Germans could make that match a back-and-forth barn burner. Curacao plays the underdog role. Two high pressing teams (Germany & Ivory Coast), one defensive minded (Ecuador) and one that is very much out manned will make this a 3-team race group and a high potential for all three teams to advance and that may mean some BIG scorelines.
Group F Teams in a Sentence
Netherlands - Superstars and the class of a tough group.
Japan - Organized, with a potential breakout star, “Japanese Messi”.
Sweden - Direct, tall and imposing.
Tunisia - Disciplined, experienced.
For more on each team - see the CS GROUP F Simple Guide.

In Summary
Netherlands bring a complete team, fluidity and attacking flair. Ronald Koeman, the Dutch manager, stands above the others in the group and may have the top 2-3 players as well. The known star power sits with the Dutch, and the question is what newcomer from any side may join the superstar level. This group will be a clash of styles. Japan’s high-pressing, technical precision and work rate, Sweden’s tall, direct physicality, and Tunisia’s disciplined, counter-attacking African resolve. When Tunisia-Sweden play, the game will be a test of African organization against Nordic structure. The teams that advance will need to play an adaptable style, expect halftime adjustments to be key for each side.
