EPL Match Week 33 Recap

WOW - lots of surprises this weekend and some great celebrations.

Remember this great take from Jay Bilas regarding court storming -

One time, all you have to do is once they're on the court, don't let them off. Just say, 'You're all detained' and give them all citations or arrest them if you want to…..” ~Jay Bilas

You know - because Duke.

Dook Graduate

Bundesliga Champions

Leverkusen - “Hold my Beer” - Literally. A GREAT pitch storming (X) after winning the title for the first time in their 120-year history, and BEER!

  • Bayer continued their unbeaten streak this season, 43 matches and counting, next up - At West Ham.

  • Bayer set the Bundesliga record for unbeaten league streak at 29 - beating Pep’s Bayern Munich’s 28 match streak.

  • A Great Celebration.

  • Jay Bilas würde sie verhaften lassen

Ever been to the Essen Haus in Madison, WI? CS may or may not have had one Boot (after another) back in the day. These scenes from Bayer’s celebration bring back memories!

They don’t mess around with goggles or cans of Lite…..a full pour! (X)

Headlines 📌

  • Major Letdowns (plural). Liverpool and Arsenal both lost at home as large favorites, Spurs were pounded on the road, all without scoring.

  • CleanSheet Suprises. Heading into the weekend Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs had been shut out 6 times in total, all 3 were shut out.

  • Top 8 Spots. All top 8 spots in the table changed.

  • Barking Dogs. Just 3 betting favorites won this weekend, City, Chelsea and Brentford.

  • Trap Kick. A fundamental every soccer player learned at the age of 7, trap the ball with your foot and kick it. May be back to basics for Burnley Keeper Arijanet Muric. Last week Muric was slow clearing a ball which led to Everton’s winning goal (X). This week he topped himself in what goes down as the biggest blunder of the season (Must Watch X), costing Burnley another win.

  • Speaking of 7 Year Olds!. Chelsea was up 4-0 and preparing to take a penalty when a “fight” broke out amongst teammates on who was going to take the kick - $1B spent, teenagers - is Pochettino the Gaffer or their Teacher.

  • Cole Palmer. Plamer’s 4 goals moved him into a tie with Erling Haaland for most goals in the PL this season with 20.

Match Week 33 Recap - Organized by 🏇🏇Races🏇🏇

🏆Title Race - City jump in front, 6 to play. 🏆

City win title by winning out.

  • Three big home favorites, only one got the job done. Major disappointment for the Gunners and Reds as City jump over them in the table - 6 more wins for City and the Title is theirs.

Arsenal Lose 0-2 v Villa

  • Nemesis. Arsenal lost twice to Villa this year, a little bit of revenge for Villa manager Unai Emery who managed Arsenal for just over a year and was fired in 2019.

  • Unexpected. Villa with the winner (X) and the road fans go crazy.

Liverpool Lose 0-1 v Palace

City 5-1 v Luton Town

  • Off the Face!  City take the lead with the ultimate deflection and was all City after that.

Europe Race

Biggest Winners: Villa, Newcastle, Chelsea.

Biggest Losers: Spurs, Hammers.

Point is a Point: Man United, BHA, Wolves.

  • Villa Recover. A huge day for Villa at Arsenal winning 2-0 and jumping them back into the Champions League spot.

  • Shock. Newcastle 4-0 Spurs. The Magpies scored twice in 95 seconds and dominated Spurs at St James’ Park moving back into European positions. How’d they only score 4?

  • More Domination. Chelsea 6-0 Everton. Cole Palmer scored FOUR goals in the win, three in the first 29’ here (X 90s), the fourth was a penalty. The two Robbie’s break it down post-match here (X 90s).

  • Both Wanted More. Forest 2-2 Wolves. This was a back-and-forth match, great action and a draw was a good result. Matheus Cunha had both Wolves goals and it’s always great to see a Goalkeeper get the assist.

  • Same Old. Cherries 2-2 Man United. Bournemouth deserved the three points but Man U converted a penalty at 65’ and got the road point. After the match a reporter asked MU manager Erik ten Hag if he fears leading MU to their worst ever finish in the PL, he got up and left. In 2013 United finished 7th with David Moyes (current West Ham manager), the lowest they have ever finished in the PL.

  • BHA Will Take It. Burnley 1-1 BHA. Burnley deserved the three points but got the draw with the goalie error described in the Headlines.

Relegation Race

Biggest Winners: Palace, Brentford.

Biggest Losers: Everton, Luton Town, Sheffield United, and Burnley given how they lost.

Point is a Point: Forest.

  • Can We Call It?. Palace’s big win at Anfield may be enough to keep them up, hard to think Forest and Luton Town will get 3 wins in their last 5.

  • First Win In 10. Brentford 2-0 Blades. The Bee’s got their first win in 10 matches home to Sheffield United and that should be enough to keep them up. Doesn’t matter how you score ‘em (X).

  • Drubbing. Everton’s 6-0 result at Chelsea is cause for concern but Everton may have done enough early in the season to stay up. They also benefit from home matches against Forest and Sheffield United and a road trip to Luton Town, all below them in the table.

  • Expected. Luton Town 1-5 City. “We are on to Cincinatti”, home to Brentford.

  • Running Out of Runway. Burnley 1-1 BHA. The Clarets have just 1 loss in 6 matches, but 4 Draws are not going to get it done.

  • Needed More. Forest 1-1 Wolves. Both sides wanted 3 points, but 1 point is not going to get it done and Forest are right in the middle of the relegation race.

Hot Topic 🔥🔥🔥

Wrexham -

In 2020, Rob Mcelhenney and Ryan Reynolds bought the tier 5 soccer club Wrexham for ~$2M. Longer story here (sporting news 3m read) - short story - Rob asked Ryan to buy in on a lower tier soccer club and try to grow it, they found Wrexham.

In addition to buying the club, they produced a television series - Welcome to Wrexham (it’s great!). Season 3 is in the works - here are Season 1 and Season 2 trailers.

Promotion/Relegation

Longer Story - See the CleanSheet - How EFL Works.

Shorter Story - There are 92 clubs spread across the top 4 leagues in the English Football. This is called the English Football League (EFL). The 5th - 11th leagues are called the “semi-pro” level and have 1750+ clubs.

Clubs can move up a level by finishing at/near the top of the table or can move down a level by finishing at/near the bottom of the table.

Moving into the EFL is the most difficult jump to make. Just TWO clubs are promoted from level 5 to level 4 each year.

Promotion means significantly more money for clubs. A promotion to the Premier League is worth at LEAST $250M to the club.

Spoiler Alert - Wrexham promoted in back-to-back seasons.

Last season Wrexham was promoted from Level 5 (National League) to Level 4 (League 2) of the EFL. Last weekend Wrexham was promoted from Level 4 (League 2) to Level 3 (League 1).

Here is what it means (X) to the community, the fans and the club.

Super Paul Mullin

Speaking of “Pitch Storming’s”…..

Stockport County also heading up to League 1 - sitting ahead of Wrexham in the table.

More promotions on tap this week.
