Headlines 📌

  • Drama & Suspense. Liverpool wins 2-1 after questionable call that took them down to 10 men early. Man United goes down 2-0 in first 4 min (fastest that has ever happened to MU) but come all the way back to win 3-2. City struggle at SU, finally get their goal to lead 1-0, concede at 86’ min and then score at 88’ to pull out the W. Arsenal concedes in first AND last min of match for a 2-2 D. Wolves score on road in 87’ for a key 3 points.

  • Best Result of Match Week 2. 3-1 West Ham over Brighton & Hove Albion. BHA was top of table, at home and had outscored opponents 8-1. West Ham lost their best player, Declan Rice, to start the season and the front office was declining manager Moyes requests to sign players. So, circle the wagons and take on an us versus them mentality. Moyes tactics have been great, and this team is energized, prepared and relentless. WH allowed BHA to keep possession (67%) and focused on their counterattack. It worked, can they sustain it?

  • Biggest Disappointment. Everton losing 1-0 at home to Wolves, and more importantly have yet to score this season after missing several “great” chances.

  • Plenty of disappointment to go around. Newcastle losing their lead to 10-man Liverpool at home. Forest lose their 2-0 lead to Man U. Burnley get hammered, again, at home to Villa. Arsenal conceding to 10-man Fulham late. But nothing is more disappointing than Everton.

  • Carabao Cup. This week most PL teams will be playing mid-week in other tournaments. All you need to know about the Carabao Cup.

  • Liverpool & Klopp. Heading into the match superstar striker Mo Salah was rumored to be considering a transfer to the Saudi League for 7x his current salary. Liverpool went down early 1-0, and then down a man after a controversial red card to superstar defenseman Virgil van Dijk at 28’. Fast forward and The Red’s find two goals in the final 10 minutes to pull off the improbable on the road at a top club with a great home field.

Klopp is a top manager in the world, and a GREAT interview. Here is his post match reaction. (7 min)

  • Things got heated when Newcastle Assistant Manager Jason Tindall (left) may have overstepped too early and poked the bear?

How it started…..

NU 1 - Reds 0 & down to 10 men

How its going…..

NU 1 - Reds 2

Hot Topic 🔥🔥🔥

Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town were promoted to the PL this year and all three have yet to win or draw. Will any of them stay up? All? None?

Since 1992…

  • 1 time have all three promoted teams gone straight back down. (1997/98)

  • 4 times have all three promotes teams stayed up, including last year.

  • The highest finish of a newly promoted club? 3rd. Newcastle (94) and Forest (95).

This year all three teams will be in play for relegation late into the season. There seems to be a much BIGGER gap between the have and have nots than normal. Teams who were in the PL last year are much better positioned to make moves that could be enough to help them stay up - see Everton, Bournemouth, Forest, Wolves.

Although, Everton are acting like they want to be relegated and that would be history making. Everton have been in the top league since 1951, 68 seasons. Only Arsenal have been in the top flight longer, 103 seasons.

For more on Promotion & Relegation…

Relegation/Promotion IS the absolute best thing going in sport – people here in the US don’t quite understand the impact it has on the season since we don’t have it in our leagues. The closest comparable is the NCAA Hoops Tournament, with the conference tournaments, but that only rewards teams for winning. You lose and your season is over, and you wait for next season. This is the kind of excitement you get:

You get moments like this “Court Storming” on the road. (1 min) Promotion for Forest Green from League 2 to League 1.

You get moments like this at home (30s) as Exeter guaranteed 2nd place in League 2 to go up to League 1.

And a reminder, promotion/relegation has a big impact on how the season is played:

  • No tanking, something to play for all season, significant rewards and punishment for winners and losers, you can finish 4th and “win” – it’s GREAT for both the clubs and the fans.

  • Teams promoted to the EPL earn a minimum of $250M more by being in that league (more the higher you finish in the league), those relegated lose that opportunity.
