Headlines 📌

  • Best Result of Match Week 20. Fulham at Arsenal 2-1. All looked good for the Gunners with a Saka goal at 5’. Expect FFC to fold up the tent and go home. But that’s not what happened and it’s back-to-back losses for Arsenal and a fall from the top of the table. This Arteta statement pretty much sums it up, “That was the worst performance of the season”. For The Cottagers, it’s a big confidence building win to stabilize the ship.

  • OR. Was it Forest 2-1 Man United. FFC’s win was at Arsenal, and it seems each time Man United loses it’s the Best Result of the Week candidate for their opponent. But, with 9 losses in 20 matches for United, can it be the best result of the match week?

    • A First. This was the FIRST EVER WIN for Forest over United at Community Stadium and their first win over United since 1994.

    • The Goals.

    • Peter Drury. Another great call. (60s X)

    • Matt Turner. The USMNT goalie had lost his starting role but seems to be back in as starter for new Manager Nuno with his third start in a row and second win. While he continues to make some mistakes, see keeper error above, he is also making some great saves and showing he will compete the USMNT starting role. Article from the Daily Mail on about his perseverance.

    • 2 of 3. That’s 2 wins in 3 matches with new Manager Nuno. Forest had 3 wins in 17 matches this season before Nuno took over. Good hire, so far.

    • THIS Interview Is BRILLIANT. Take 2 Min and Listen to this interview with Anthony Elanga who was sold from United to Forest prior to the season. Great perspective and focus for a 21 yo. (X)

  • Howling. Wolves 3-0 Everton.

  • Never A Doubt. Villa 3-2 Burnley. Burnley deserved better at Villa.

  • Stay Down! Alejo Valez was injured in the closing minutes of Spurs win over Bournemouth and manager Ange Postecoglou wanted him to stay down. Bournemouth was not happy, and Ange took offense.

  • West Ham. In the last 9 matches The Hammers are 6W 2D 1L, with 4 Clean Sheets in the last 4 matches against 4 teams in the top 10 of the Table. Manager David Moyes is working wonders by changing their style of play to the change in personnel from last year. Manager of the year candidate at the halfway point? YES!

  • 0-0. The last match of the busy run during December 21 thru January 2 stretch of games finished 0-0 between West Ham & BHA. That is only the 5th 0-0 Draw on the season, the being 12/17 between Liverpool & Man United.

  • Rooney. Quick update on Birmingham City, Tom Brady’s recent purchase.

  • Birmingham is in the Championship and were humming along in 6th place when they made a manager change and hired Everton and Man United legend Wayne Rooney

  • After 83 days, Rooney is out winning just 2 times in 15 matches and sitting 20th (of 24) and 6 points above relegation.

  • Some are blaming management (for bringing Rooney in when they did, putting him in a difficult position to succeed.

Current Situation 📈📉

Clean Sheets Counter

84 Season Clean Sheets

  • BHA got their FIRST Clean Sheet, last team to do so this season.

  • Just 3 matches with a clean sheet, as BHA and West Ham finished 0-0.

  • That’s 4 Clean Sheets in a row for West Ham.

4 Match Week 2 Clean Sheets

  • Man City, Wolverhampton, West Ham, BHA.

  • Expected clean sheets through 20 weeks would be 110, given the historical average of 5.5 per week. Still well behind the pace with 84.

Hot Topic 🔥🔥🔥

Walter Elias Disney.

Walt Disney developed Micky Mouse in 1928 and with that started a Copyright and an amazing run into arguably the most recognizable brand in the world. CS will not get into the debate about the recent decisions and directions of Disney corporation - but the facts are the stock is at its lowest in a decade, content is tanking, and they seem to be running counter to their brand.

Add to that - on January 1 Disney’s Micky Mouse copyright expired and has entered the public domain. A typical copyright lasts for 55 years on this kind of content. Disney was successful getting Congress to extend that copyright protection in 1983 by 20 years and again in 2003 by 20 years.

While there are still many restrictions, here is an interesting read on the Infestation 88 video game (2min read - Kotaku) and some of the legal battles to come.

In 2022, another major character became public domain - Winnie the Pooh - written by A.A. Milne in 1926. Disney’s version of Pooh is still under Copyright, but that does not keep people from using the name to create content. Here is what can occur (3m read - Den of Geek).

Off Island 🏝️

Speaking of Ownership Rights…..

Wait, You’re Telling Me…..a club that bought a player for $100M and pays that player tens of millions of dollars, allows that player to leave mid-season and miss key games so they can go play for their National Team in a tournament on the far side of the world? For 3-6 weeks? Risk injury?

Yes, yes they do.

But, who decides/enforces if players can/must be released from their professional club to their national club - the answer is IT’S COMPLICATED. FIFA is the governing body that sets the regulations. Clubs can request certain exceptions - but can’t just say no to the National Team.

Here is a great short read (1m read - TalkSport) on West Ham asking for an exception for Kudus to play in their BHA match - Ghana said no. The club paying his salary cannot just play him.

As a sports fan - I love that most players want to represent their country. Makes me question all the “opt-outs” in NCAA College Football, MLB, etc.

How many casual soccer fans would know this guy if he didn’t play on the US National Team “back in the day”? Which clubs here his professional clubs? You might know - but this picture represents what most remember.

So - with that being said - over the next 4-6 weeks the PL and other leagues currently in season will be seeing key players head out for the following two major tournaments.

The Impact
