Headlines 📌

  • Best Result of Match Week 16. Everton at Burnley 2-0. That’s 4 in a row for Everton and 19 points out of a possible 24 in the last 8 to completely overcome their 10-point deduction.

  • VAR Makes the Game Worse. AKA Replay makes sport worse. That’s it, that’s the headline.

    • Some evidence you say? Just this weekend - 3 VAR reviews that were not clear and obvious, completely changed the match, and took minutes to sort out completely changing the flow of the match.

      • Brentford (X)- Yellow on field, red from VAR. Up 1-0 at the time, lost 2-1.

      • Fulham (X) - Yellow on the field, red from VAR. 0-0 at the time it was all Newcastle needed.

      • Wolves (X). Ruled onside, then offside by a shoelace? A ½ size smaller shoe and the goals stands. Either way, had no bearing on the play and it took a long time to figure out.

  • Northwest Derby Breakdown. Liverpool 0-0 Man United.

    • Disappointed. Liverpool is not a complete team, yet. They sit near the top but have pulled several wins out at the last minute and couldn’t do it this time. They will be disappointed not getting all 3 points.

    • Satisfied. Man U leaves happy with a point on the road. They fought hard for it and now have something to build on.

    • Parking the Bus. This is a term used to talk about a team sitting back on defense and playing to not allow a goal. Man U did not “Park the Bus” against Liverpool, but they definitely played with a defensive approach and looked to try to steal a goal. For many teams this is a great approach against the top clubs. For the Man U supporters, they expect their club to go at any other club, not sit back. So, while the approach worked for a point it does show the work to be done at United.

    • Statistical Landslide. 34 - 6 on shots, 34-3 on crosses, 12-0 on corners, 8-1 on saves. Not something you expect to see when Man United plays anyone.

    • One team leaves happy with a point, the other frustrated.

    • Broken Streak. It’s the first time in 34 matches Liverpool has been shut out.

      34-6 shots

  • Villa Magic. Down 0-1 at Brentford, a red card and two goals later and Villa get the win.

  • D-Fence. Arsenal and Liverpool are 1&2 at the top of the table and both sides have allowed just 15 goals on the season, the only teams to average less than 1 per match. Interestingly, Everton and Man City are next with 20 goals allowed. Sheffield United lead the league in goals allowed, 43.

  • Set Piece Defending. Two teams have yet to concede a goal off a corner kick. Tottenham and Wolves.

  • Abandoned. Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch and the match was stopped early in the 2H tied at 1. Lockyer was responsive by the time he was taken off the pitch. It’s the second time this year Lockyer has collapsed during a game, the first coming last May. The match will most likely be replayed in full at a date yet to be determined.

Hot Topic 🔥🔥🔥

Tis The Season.

Red Cards are on pace to break the record for most in an EPL season.

🟥

Red Cards are on pace to break the record for most in an EPL season.

Just this weekend 5 red cards were handed out. That’s 37 for the season.

  • The record for red cards is 76 in 2005/06. 2014/15 saw 71.

  • Total Red Cards over the last 10 seasons: 32, 29, 42, 47, 44, 47, 39, 41, 59, 71.

  • This season:

    • Liverpool and Tottenham lead the league with 4 each.

    • Burnley, Chelsea, Fulham and Wolves each have 3.

    • Newcastle and Luton Town do not have any red cards.

Without a detailed analysis, it seems around 35-40% of red cards are for “violent conduct”. A 3-match suspension is included with a violent conduct red card while a one match suspension is included for being sent off for a second yellow.
