International Break - 10 11 24

Stats, EFL & Trying to Reason with Hurrican Season

Stay safe out there Florida…..

β€œSqualls out on the gulf stream
Big storms coming soon
I passed out in my hammock
God, I slept way past noon
Stood up and tried to focus
I hoped I wouldn't have to look far
I knew I could use a Bloody Mary
So I stumbled next door to the bar

And now I must confess
I could use some rest
I can't run at this pace very long
Yes, it's quite insane
I think it hurts my brain
But it cleans me out and then I can go on”

Observations πŸ”

It’s the second International Break of the season - Let’s take a look at some stat’s, see if what they tell us.

Big Picture - Teams

Home/Away breakdown by points earned and goals scored/allowed.

While it’s only 7 matches and a lot can depend on WHO you’ve played, there are definitely some interesting trends and disparities.

CS Analysis

  • Brentford have been significantly better at HOME.

    • 10 points at home, 0 on the road

    • 11 goals scored at home, 2.8 per match is good for most in the PL with City, yet just 2 goals scored on the road, .7 per match.

  • Forest has been significantly better on the Road.

    • Just 2 goals scored at home.

    • Defense has played well at home and away.

  • We know Man United is struggling to score. On the positive side, they have allowed just 2 goals in 4 matches on the road. What’s crazy is they have just 1 goal at home.

  • Chelsea perfect on the road but only getting 5 points in 4 home matches. 3.3 goals per road match leads the league.

  • West Ham have allowed 9 goals at home and just 2 on the road.

  • Leicester City’s defense has been much worse on the road than at home allowing 1.7 more goals on the road. No other team has even close to that differential.

  • Didn’t need the above breakdown to know Liverpool’s defense has been Elite.

  • The bottom of the table is littered with teams allowing more than 2 goals per match on the road.

One season apart - as a reminder, we are 7/38 of the way through the season. Typically, a team needs 40 points to avoid the relegation zone.

For more stats you can check out the following sights.

Across the EFL ⚽πŸ₯…

Quick Reminder - the PL is the top level of a 20 level English Football League structure. The top 4 are considered β€œprofessional”, 5-11 are β€œsemi-pro” and the rest are local clubs.

Here are all the teams in the top four levels, ordered by their historical wins and the level they are currently in.

The Current Standings - and surface level insight.

The Championship (level 2)

Last season’s PL teams

  • Sheffield United sit 2nd

  • Burnley sit 3rd

  • Luton Town sit 21st

Did not expect this…

  • Wayne Rooney, who had a GREAT playing career has had a BAD managerial career, until his new club Plymouth Argyle helped him to be nominated for Manager of the Month.

Looking for some underdogs to root for?

  • Of the current top 10 - Oxford United have been away from the top level the longest AND they spent last season in League 1.

  • Blackburn was last in the PL in 2012, then ending a run of 11 in a row in the PL.

League One (level 3)

Celebrity at the Top…

  • Tom Brady’s Birmingham City, relegated from the Championship last season sit 1st.

  • Wrexham - Rob and Ryan’s team - sit 2nd, after having been promoted the last 2 seasons from Level 5 to 4 and Level 4 to 3 (League 1).

League Two (level 4)

  • Notts County, moved up to League 2 with Wrexham 2 years ago, they made a run at promotion last season and are in the mix again.

  • Notts also have the most wins of all time in the EFL for teams currently in League 2. Wimbledon has the second most.

  • 7 of the teams in League 2 have played in the Top Level at some point in their history, 17 have not.
