  • Check out Monday’s Czabecast for a WC Rundown with CS.

  • All Germany 7-1, but Curacao did score their first ever goal in the WC briefly bringing it to 1-1.

  • Maybe the best match so far, two teams that could make a long run drew 2-2, Netherlands v Japan. Netherlands led by a goal twice. Japan scored on a corner for their latest ever WC goal at 88’. Japan looked good and they were missing 3 key players.

  • Ecuador hit the bar/post hard twice in the 1H, both sides had some GREAT chances, but Ivory Coast score late to take all three points and put pressure on Ecuador.

  • Sweden with the early lead over Tunisia 2-1 at HT, ending too late for this newsletter.

  • Great scenes with the Oranje Army of the Netherlands in Dallas, the Orange Bus, the Samauri Blue, and a packed stadium of two great fan bases.

  • What does the Tartan Army do the day after their team won, head to Fenway of course. Check out those scenes online.

  • What do Japan fans, Samauri Blue, do after their team finishes a match, they pickup after themselves at the stadium. A Great Tradition.

  • Monday brings us to Spain and Belgium’s groups, G & H, with Mo Salah (Egypt), Iran (quite the timing of the ceasefire), Cape Verde’s first ever tournament, and an interesting Saudi v Uruguay matchup.

Group G Teams in a Sentence

  • Belgium - Talent all across the field, young and old.

  • Egypt - A couple superstars could make the difference.

  • Iran - Defend. Defend. Defend.

  • New Zealand - Punch above their skillset and look for magic in crosses.

For more on each team - see the CS GROUP G Simple Guide.

In Summary

Belgium’s golden generation (still potent under their manager) bring new young talent and the best manager in the group, Rudi Garcia. If they “click” they could dominate. Egypt may have the biggest difference maker in Mo Salah and their counter-attacking grit top heavy side could also “click”. Iran is going to defend, the question is will it be good enough. New Zealand will play a physical, direct style and try to give Chris Wood as many chances as possible. Could be lot of goals in Belgium v Egypt as both sides will attack with proven scorers. In contrast Iran v New Zealand could be very defensive with a focus on long balls and an aerial attack.

Group H Teams in a Sentence

  • Spain - Talent all across the pitch, title or bust.

  • Cape Verde - Think Rocky, looking to punch above their weight.

  • Saudi Arabia - Organized, defensive, looking to counter.

  • Uruguay - Highly skilled, streetfighter mentality.

For more on each team - see the CS GROUP H Simple Guide.

In Summary

Spain brings a blend of battle-hardened experience and generational young talent with world-class midfield control and dazzling attackers. Not only do they have the talent, they may be the best side in terms of coming together as a “team”. Uruguay will play a high-intensity pressing style, some would say a street-fighting approach, and Marcelo Bielsa will try to exploit transitions with their dangerous forwards. Cape Verde will bring their underdog, nothing to lose mentality and their compact counter-attacking grit. Saudi Arabia is going to defend deep and strike on the break, the question is will their organization be good enough. Could be a lot of goals in Spain v Uruguay as both sides will attack with proven scorers and high energy. In contrast Cape Verde v Saudi Arabia could be very defensive with a focus on set pieces and long balls. Should be a fun group to watch as all 4 sides play very different styles.
