England 2-1 Norway.
England looked tired, Norway got the jump early going up 1-0 on a great goal by Andreas Schjelderup at 36’. Watch
Then, the VAR became part of the story. 📽️
Norway looked like they took a 2-0 lead off a corner kick, but the play was reviewed by VAR and Erling Haaland was called for a foul for pushing (with 2 hands). Goal was taken of the board. The foul should’ve been called before VAR even got involved. Watch
On a long, high kick by Norway keeper Orjan Nyland it appeared the ball hit the “spider cam”, barely, and fell a little short of its target right to an England player over mid-field. England advanced the ball quickly and Jude Bellingham took over and scored a great goal just before the half. Watch

England made some subs coming out of the half, one being Saka for Madueke, and Saka made a big difference in the match.
Both sides had opportunities, but England looked like the better side.
1-1 after 90’ - seemed like the right result.
Right out of start of the next 30’ of extra time Jude Bellingham scored, and while Norway had some chances England held on. Watch
Surprisingly, Herling Haaland was subbed off at 105’ and it just wasn’t meant to be for Norge.
Role Players
Lots of focus on the stars of the tournament, and rightly so, but there are so many players making a difference who don’t get the goals or the limelight. One of those players is Dan Burn. The 6’7” defender, who plays his club ball at Newcastle, has made quite an impact in his 24 minutes of total action for England.

Argentina 3-1 Switzerland.
Switzerland had the better of the play for the first 70’ of the match, yet Argentina found the net early on an Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool) header off a corner kick and led 1-0 at HT. Watch
Finally, at 67’ Switzerland got the goal that felt like it was coming on a Dan Ndoye give and go, 1-1.
Then VAR became part of the story. 📽️
Just 2 minutes after Switzerland’s goal, a Yellow Card was given to Argentina’s Leandro Paredes. However, VAR reviewed the play and determined Paredes did not foul Embolo but that Embolo “dove” and the card was instead given to Embolo. That was Embolo’s second yellow of the match, 2 yellows in a match means red card. Switzerland down to 10 men. Watch.
Switzerland managed the final 20 minutes well with just 10 men and after 90’ the match was at 1-1.
Switzerland seemed to be solid defensively throughout the extra time, but at 112’ Julian Alvarez kicked an absolute golazo to put Argentina ahead 2-1. Watch
A Martinez goal at 120+1’ sealed the match.

Net-Net - VAR is good when checking for “Clear & Obvious” errors. The issues come in in the definition of “Clear & Obvious”.
Sports have a human element, it’s never going to be perfect. Any attempt to use VAR, ball tech, etc to make the game perfect at the expense of enjoyment should not be done. VAR will be and should be used, the focus on improvement should be in the application and use, not in perfection trying to fix every human element.
