SoccerShocker 💥

News is coming out that striker Florian Balogun will be available for the USMNT’s match Monday night against Belgium. Flo had received a red card in the previous match and was expected to have to sit out the next match, but the ruling was appealed and it seems the card will be lowered to a Yellow. A big boost for the team.

  • There will be many complaining that this is unprecedented, it is not.

  • The red card was not overturned, it was suspended under FIFA’s formal discipline committee.

  • FIFA has a “independent disciplinary committee” that makes these decisions, so the official storyline is FIFA leadership had no hand in the decision, nor did any outside influencers (like the White House or media).

  • This is not favoritism, VAR protocol was misapplied - The VAR can ‘check’ the footage in normal speed and/or in slow motion; but, in general… normal speed should be used for the ‘intensity’ of an offence. - This is not how VAR reviewed the play. FIFA Articple 27 corrected the error.

  • From FIFA - “In line with article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year. If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”

  • Prior to the start of the WC Christiano Ronaldo had a 3-match suspension for a red card in the qualifying rescinded, otherwise he would’ve missed the first two group stage matches.

Sunday Match Preview ⚽⚽

#5 Brazil v #21 Norway- Sunday, 3 cst - NYNJ

Thanks for pic FanDuel

Vinni Jr will not have to score for Brazil to win, but Haaland will have to score for Norway to win. Expecting a bunch of goals, this could be 2-3 either way. The midfield will most likely be the difference, which midfield supports their defense more and serves their front line and wingers more. Both sides cannot just rely on their back line holding these powerful attacks off the score sheet. Brazil’s manager Carlos Ancellotti could be the difference if he gets his highly talented club flowing. CS prediction - 2-2 at 90’ and one of the stars finds the net in extra time.

  • Brazil to win in 90’ -131 (To Qualify “Advance” -260)

  • Norway to win in 90’ +350 (To Qualify “Advance” +195)

  • Draw in 90’ +275

Brazil has never beaten Norway. 2 Draws, 2 losses between 1988 - 2006.

#10 Mexico v #4 England - Saturday, 7 cst - Mexico City

32 yo Harry Kane v 17 y Gilberto Mora

Azteca, Altitude, CONCACAF’d. The story before the match is about how will England handle the environment - playing at a smoggy 7,000 ft above sea level, playing in Azteca where Mexico have lost just 2 times in their last 49 competitive matches there (it will be 99% Mexico crowd), and will the team be able to sleep? Mexican fans will be outside the hotel all night before the match lighting off fireworks and playing music.

On the field, this match should go England’s way but watch the eyes and body language of Englands players early in the match. They can’t be shell shocked or they are in trouble. Then, watch for the legs of the England players - how are they handling the altitude. If England handles both those scenarios, they should win. If not, Mexico could win via Clean Sheet. CS Prediction - 2-1 England.

  • Mexico to win in 90’ +202 (To Qualify “Advance” +100)

  • England to win in 90’ +145 (To Qualify “Advance” -127)

  • Draw in 90’ +212

87,000 Flags have been placed in the seats at Azteca, this environment will be HUGE.

Saturday Match Recap🧢🧢

Morocco 3-0 Canada

Morocco always looked like they were going to win. Didn’t play very well in the 1H, some of that had to do with Canada, but then at 50’ Azzedine Ounahi found the net and the game opened up. Canada had some chances, but Ounahi found the net again for his Brace (2 goals) at 82’ and that was that. A 90+8’ goal finished off the scoring.

France 1-0 Paraguay

Paraguay did what they needed to do, turn this into a back alley bout. Lots of smack talking, grabbing, pushing after every whistle and it did get under the skin of France. While France dominated possession the style of play actually was controlled by Paraguay. France finally got on the board after a VAR replay ruled a penalty occurred in the box, was the right call. Mbappe converted the penalty and France held off Paraguay the last 10 minutes of chances.

Hey, How About That 🤔

  • Jurgen Klopp. Big news as former Liverpool gaffer (manager) Jurgen Klopp is set to become Germany’s new manager. Aside from being Clean Sheet’s favorite manager in all of soccer, the German is loved by the fan base.

  • Messi.

    • Messi ranks 618 out of 618 players in distance covered during the WC.

    • Messi ranks 1 out of 618 in goals scored.

  • DYK. Morocco was the FRIST COUNTRY to recognize US Independence. The Moroccan-American Treaty of Peace & Friendship was negotiated by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams in 1786 and remains the longest unbroken bilateral treaty in American history.

  • 5 Remain. Of the 14 teams left in the tournament, 5 have won a World Cup before, Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain and England.

  • Looking to follow the players you are now hooked on after the World Cup? Here is a good way measure the quality of the world leagues. (thanks @mattdoyle76)

Tracking total minutes played in the World Cup Group Stage.

  • England has 2X the minutes than the second most league.

  • England’s SECOND League is in the top 10.

  • MLS is 6th most, not bad.

  • Interesting none of the South American Leagues or Mexico make the cut.

  1. English Premeir League - 24,533 min

  2. German Bundesliga - 12,922

  3. French Ligue 1 - 10,066
