There are 17 official soccer balls for EACH WC match.
Connected Ball Technology. Each ball has a 14g “inertial measurement unit” motion sensor chip that operates at 500 Hz, capturing data 500 times/second.
The chip is side-mounted on one of 4 panels, the other 3 panels have added weights in the other 3 panels to keep the ball balanced.
Each ball is powered up before the match. The charge lasts 6 hours. It takes 2.5 hours to charge. Balls are rotated frequently to ensure they are constantly tracking play.
The IMU measures acceleration, spin, orientation, speed, direction and small 3d movements. The data is transmitted real-time to VAR.
When you combine it with 60 stadium tracking cameras and AI processing it creates a precise live 3D model of the ball in play.
