2024/25 Finish - Promoted

2nd Place In the Championship

Welcome Back. After a year in The Championship (Level 2) Burnley is back in the PL. Burnley have won automatic promotion in each of their last four attempts in The Championship. They have lost just FIVE of their last 115 matches in the Championship. The PL is not the Championship.

Turf Moor History. A medium sized club who return to the PL for the 9th time in 12 seasons after a 2nd place finish in the Championship. The club have played at Turf Moor since 1883, the second longest consecutive streak in all of English Soccer behind Preston North End’s stadium Deepdale. The record attendance is 54,775 fans - which is amazing considering the seating capacity is roughly 22,000. But, back in the day there were no individual seats, just stands. So it seems people sucked the gut in and made room. The stadium was built on the Cricket Ground which still sits adjacent to the Cricket Field Stand. To this day the seats are the original “wooden” seats installed in the 1970s.

Parker. Manager Scott Parker is no rookie to the PL or getting clubs promoted to the Championship. His playing career included the big clubs - Chelsea, Newcastle, West Ham, Spurs and Fulham. His managerial career included Fulham, Bournemouth, Club Brugge and now Burnley. Rookie Manager Vincent Kompany is a hot commodity, reportedly not exploring potential large club opportunities to stay with Burnley. The goal this season is to avoid relegation, and position for another long run in the PL..

Stingy. Parker is known to take a defensive minded approach to his tactics and that was evident as Burnley conceded just 16 goals in 46 matches of the Championship last season. A big part of that story was goalkeeper James Trafford. Trafford was on loan from Man City and he has been called back to Manchester.

Style. Last time The Clarets were promoted to the PL Vincent Kompany played a ball control, play from the back style that just didn’t translate for the players they had at the PL level. This time around it’s a different club. The defensive style of play will keep them in more matches, but it will be tough sledding for Burnley to stay up. They need more “PL” level players. Burnley spent north of $140M this offseason and much of it went to players under 23 years old, expect for 35 year old Kyle Walker signed from Man City.

The Culture

Up the Clarets! Have a Bene and Hot. Burnley, a town of 75,000, is considered to be one of the best supported sides per capita averaging 20,000+ fans per match. Burnley FC has a long-standing friendship with Dutch team Helmond Sport where fans regularly attend each others matches. Going to Turf Moor is not a big city experience. Located 35 miles north of Manchester, Turf Moor is on the edge of a town with views of wooded hills, gardens and parks.

Heading to the UK and looking for a match to go to, put Burnley on your short list.

140 years, 80,000 residents

Burnley is an original founding member of the football league. In 1921 the club went on a 30 league unbeaten run on their way to the title. That unbeaten run stood for 80 years until Arsenal topped it in 2004. What makes this story really shine is the fact Burnley is a town of 80,000 residents and again this year, 140+ years later, they are competing in the top League in England.
