2023/24 Finish - 3rd Place, Will Play in Champions League |
Global Brand. Large club, big history, lots of cups, wonderful traditions, top 5 ($5.3B) valued club in the world. From 1973 - 1990 won 11 of 18 league titles. Have never finished lower than 8th since. Prior to two seasons ago, the Reds were top 4 six years in a row and made a run at the “treble” in 2020 winning the League and the Champions League but falling short in the FA Cup. By these standards, 2023 was a down year - finishing 5th and missing the CL, but 2024 was a bounce back year finishing 3rd. While that sounds like a lot of success, and it is, there was some frustration for the lack of PL titles between 1993 and 2020.
Klopp to Slot. Jurgen Klopp brought The Red’s back to their title winning ways and just as importantly brought an energy, flare and style to the club. Tough act following one of the best managers in the world. Good news for Slot is he has that remains largely intact from last season and so far Arne Slot seems to be handling the opportunity well - saying all the right things and preparing a talented team to take the next step.
Not One, Yet. Slot has not signed one new player this summer making Liverpool the only to do so in all of Europe. It may be that Slot is assessing There are some key pieces rumored to be on the short list and there is plenty of time yet to make a move. Part of this may be due to the squad being intact from a strong side last season. Expect Slot to give current players an opportunity to take the next step and then look to supplement in a couple key places. There are already rumors of 1-2 key additions in the works.
First Impressions. Liverpool’s first 5 matches of the season are very manageable except for a trip to Man United. It will be important for Slot to get off to a fast start to keep the questioning to a minimum. Anything less than 11 of the 15 available points will bring unneeded attention, rightly so or not. Challenging for cups, a top 4 in the PL and an energizing style of play are the expectations for this season and the first 5 matches will be watched closely to see how Slot fills the shoes of a legend.

OwnershipFenway Sports Group purchased Liverpool for $400M in 2010. FSG owns the Boston Red Sox, no surprise there, and they also own the Pitsburgh Penguins, several minor league teams, and their associated stadiums. Supporters have been pretty frustrated with the ownership lately. In 2019 FSG came under fire when they tried to trademark “Liverpool”. The supporters group Spirit of Shankly campaigned against the move and it ultimately denied the request given the geographic association with Liverpool. In 2021 FSG was one of 12 ownership groups to attempt to create a new European Super League - one without promotion and relegation. The attempt collapsed but left a bad taste in supporter's mouths. The club has been valued at over $4.5B - 5th highest soccer club in the world. | Biggest Rival - Everton - Merseyside Derby

Liverpool has been in the top division 108 years and only 11 in the second.
If you are looking for a club with high energy, passion and expectations - and one that competes for cups and European titles, you have a good chance of that every year with Liverpool.
In 2024, Liverpool was named the most-watched club in the world across the last five seasons by media company Nielsen with an average per season global broadcast audience of 724 million. Yet another expectation for Arne Slot to maintain.
From 1892-1896 Liverpool wore blue and white but then decided to adopt the color red for the shirt to match the city’s color. In 1964, manager Bill Shankly made the decision to go all red - and here’s how it happened from star player Ian St John and his autobiography - “The Saint: My Autobiography”.
“He [Shankly] thought the color scheme would carry psychological impact – red for danger, red for power. He came into the dressing room one day and threw a pair of red shorts to Ronnie Yeats. "Get into those shorts and let's see how you look", he said. "****, Ronnie, you look awesome, terrifying. You look 7 ft tall." "Why not go the whole hog, boss?" I suggested. "Why not wear red socks? Let's go out all in red." Shankly approved, and an iconic kit was born.”
In an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989, hundreds of Liverpool fans were crushed against perimeter fencing, 97 died, 93 that day. Legislation from that event required top-division teams to have all-seater stadiums, no benches. Every April 15th the community in Liverpool and football in general acknowledge the disaster. An annual memorial ceremony is held at Anfield and at a church in Liverpool. There was a lot of controversy after the incident if you would like to read about it. Supporters You May Recognize
