24/25 Match Week 31 Recap

Indirect, Nothing but Net & Hello Friends

As the Champions League delivers awe-inspiring soccer on Paramount+, it’s CBS that continues to be your window into nearly seven decades of golf’s greatest masterpiece. Six short months ago, nature’s fury lashed Augusta National, bending Georgia’s towering pines and testing the resilience of its manicured fairways. And, while the echo of Helene still lingers it’s the call of overcoming and triumph that brings the world’s finest golfers to Augusta for the 89th edition of the Masters. The azaleas bloom once more and the sun casts its golden glow over Magnolia Lange as the Masters returns, undeterred thanks to the tireless dedication of the groundskeepers - the unsung artists who sculpt, refine, and perfect every bloom and blade of grass. From Amen Corner to Rae’s Creek, every curve of the landscape is a canvas where legends are made. And this week, those stories will unfold before our eyes.

Headlines 📌

  • CS Match of the Week. Ipswich 1-2 Wolverhampton. BIG RESULT for Wolves. The win all but guarantee’s they will be staying up next season.

    • A win by Ipswich would have moved them to within 6 points of Wolves with 7 matches to play but that lead is now a 12-point cushion, basically ending the relegation battle.

      • Ipswich 1-0. Delap gives the Tractor Boys the lead at 15’. Watch

      • Wolves 1-1. Pablo Sarabia breaks through for Wolves at 72’. Watch

      • Wolves 2-1. Jorgen Strand Larsen all but keeps Wolves up at 84’. Watch

      • Cunha. 90s of goals and celebration.

Check out this unique play in the match…..

Indirect Free Kick - An indirect free kick is a way of re-starting a football match that means the ball cannot be kicked directly into the goal. The ball must be passed to another player before the team can attempt to score. The referee will indicate an indirect free kick by raising his arm above his head. He will maintain this position until the kick has been taken, and the ball has touched another player. A goal cannot be scored directly from an indirect free kick. An indirect free kick is awarded when a player commits a less serious foul or when play is stopped for reasons other than a foul.

The Rule In This Situation - If a GKs teammate passes the ball to him with his foot he cannot touch the ball with his hand. If this happens inside the 6-yard box, the ball is placed on the edge of the box, anywhere else in the larger box the ball is placed at the spot of the touching.

  • A23. England’s interstates and highways are often labeled the “M” or the “A”, and although Crystal Palace in the South of London and BHA on the South Coast are 45 miles apart the “A23 Derby” has been heated. You can read more about it here. The rivalry was on full display this weekend as 3 red cards were given. The game ended with 9 Palace players and 10 BHA players and an Eagles 2-1 win.

  • Great Goal. Nice win for Fulham over league leader Liverpool 3-2, and this great goal ended up making the difference - Robinson to Muniz.

  • Draws. Everton lead the PL with 14 draws on the season. Arsenal sit second with 11 draws. Of course they drew 1-1.

  • ANOTHER PL Record. In record time - Southampton officially became the earliest team to be officially relegated in a PL season with 7 matches left. They now shift their attention trying to avoid the fewest points ever recorded in a PL season. Derby County had just 11 points in the 2007-2008 season. Southampton need 2 more points to avoid another record.

    • Sacked. Ivan Juric was sacked by Southampton after the official relegation result.

Worst Ever - Question Mark

Southampton are on their way to THREE dubious records on the PL

  • Earliest ever relegated - 7 matches left (check)

  • Worst losses in the PL - twice - losing 0-9 to Leicester in 2019 and Man U in 2021 (check)

  • Will they finish with the lowest point total in a PL season (TBD)

Current Situation 📈📉

NOTE: Green Up Arrow means a club jumped UP 2 positions in the table or moved into a European spot. Red Down Arrow means a club moved DOWN 2 positions or more in the table for fell out of a European spot.

  • Unlike MW30 when all top 6 teams won MW31 saw 2 losses and 3 draws in the top 5 this week.

  • A stumble by Liverpool gives Arsenal a little more time but their draw to Everton means its 11 points back with 7 to play, and Arsenal travel to Anfield in a couple weeks. No team has lost an 11-point lead this late into the season.

  • No movement in Europe positions.

  • Spurs. The lowest finish for Spurs, ever in the PL is 15th. They currently sit 14th. There are 2 teams below them just 2 points behind. Spurs have work to do.

  • Spurs. Spurs have scored 58 goals on the season, that’s more than every other team in the table except Liverpool. Maybe they have a problem defending?

Hot Topic 🔥🔥🔥

“Nothing but Net”

This goal by Newcastle reminds CS of the McDonald’s commercial “The Showdown”.

Larry & Michael

In 1993 Larry Bird and Michael Jordan got together for one of the most iconic commercials of all time, released for Super Bowl XVII (Redskins 27-17 Dolphins).

Interesting background - Originally McD wanted Shaq opposite Jordan but were talked out of it given Shaq was a notoriously poor shooter at the time (53% from the free throw line). Even tho Bird had just retired he was known for his sharp shooting. Also, because Jordan was known as a big-time gambler, they decided Bird needed to be the one to challenge Jordan, not the other way around.
